Aside from that we have a hair steamer reviews section where we look at some of the popular models available today, along with info on where to buy hair those steamers. You can skip right onto the reviews sectionif you already know the many advantages of these fantastic machines. If you are a bit unsure as to what to look for in a quality model then you can take a look at the short guide below to give you an idea. Now lets have a look at why using one of these is a great idea for your hair.
What are the advantages of using these machines?
When it comes to coloring your hair or deep conditioning your hair, most hair salons have always utilized those big overhead hooded dryers. However in recent years, the newer kind of models have begun to overtake these in popularity, and for good reason. Unlike hooded dryers which use hot air to do your hair, a steamer uses hot steam to do the work for you. Why is this better you might ask? The main reason is that steam does an excellent job of quickly and effectively opening up your hair cuticles. When it comes to something like coloring your hair, then this will allow you to do it much quicker than with a conventional hooded dryer. The coloring particles are able to penetrate the cuticle much quicker, which will allow you to spend less time working on your hair. On average, the tasks that are performed in a hooded dryer take around 50% longer than they do in a steamer.
Better hair coloring times are not the only reason these models are so popular. Another major advantage is when it comes to deep conditioning your hair. As mentioned above, the steam penetrates very deeply into the hair, which allows the conditioner to do a really great job. This results in hair which is thicker, shinier and silkier. It also helps your hair to retain the moisture, which means less treatment is needed during the week to keep your hair in great shape. A hooded dryer uses dry heat to do this, which as you can imagine doesn’t do a very good at retaining the moisture. In addition, the added moisture from the steamer helps to prevent frizzy and split ends.
Another benefit to steamers is that they can help you to fight certain skin conditions, such as dandruff. The temperature from the steam provides enough heat to kill the bacteria or fungus. This will provide you with a healthy scalp that doesn’t itch or suffer from any flakiness.
What features should you look for?
The first and probably most important feature to look out for in a quality steamer is the build quality. Many of the cheaper models are sourced from China, meaning that the build quality is often very poor and it won’t last too long. Keep an eye out for a model that has a number of good user reviews, as this will be a good indication of what the quality of the model is really like. The warranty is also something to keep in mind. A model with at least a year warranty is something to aim for. We have seen some models that come with 30 day warranty, and you should avoid these ones.
Next up you should look for a unit that has a timer. This is handy to have in case you like to read or listen to music while your hair is being done. This will notify you when the steaming is complete, so you can get onto more important tasks 🙂
Another feature to look out for is a adjustable hood. This will allow you to move the hood into the best place for your head shape, thus giving you the best steam possible. Not all the steamers are adjustable, so remember to keep an eye out for this.
One last choice you will need to make is whether to go for the cheaper tabletop steamers, or have a standalone product like the ones you see in a salon. The tabletop variety are a little cheaper, mainly due to the fact that they don’t provide as many benefits. One of the main problems with the tabletop units is that the hoods don’t fully enclose your head, especially around the bottom of your neck. If you look at a picture of the model at the top left of this page, you will see what we mean. Most people will wrap their hair up in a bun on the top of their head to get around this issue, as this will allow the hair at the back of your head to come into full contact with the steam.
The other issue is finding a surface to use them with. If you don’t have a table or surface that is the correct height to use the unit comfortably with, you are going to have a problem using it.
A standalone salon style product is the best choice as they have neither of these problems, but they do tend to cost a little bit more than the tabletop variety. In our opinion though the little extra cost is worth splashing out on, as there is no issue with finding a correct height surface, and the hoods tend to be a more fitting shape to your head.
So that is a basic guide on what to look out for in a product. There are quite a few different models available on the market, so make sure you do your research before making a purchase. User reviews are often a good way to get an idea of the quality of the product, so perhaps read a couple of those to get some unbiased opinions. We have our own reviews section on this site, so if you are looking for some of the best hair steamers you can take a look at our reviews.
